In addition to his coursework, Sam serves as the Lead Manager for Creative Content for The Legacy Leagues, Photo Editor and Graphic Designer for The Springfield Student, and Photographer/Videographer/Editor for the Springfield College Office of Communications.
For his collegiate career, Sam chose the historic Springfield College; the Birthplace of Basketball. Upon arrival, not only was he excited to join the Birthplace family, but he was ecstatic to continue his love of journalism, specifically through sport.
As a college freshman, Sam quickly immersed himself in The Springfield Student. Initially, he picked up sporadic game stories and player of the week profiles. Eventually, he found his way to the men’s volleyball beat, a team who is consistently ranked No.1 in the NCAA’s Division III. It was here Sam gained a bulk of his reporting knowledge covering events such as the International Volleyball Hall of Fame’s Morgan Classic and an NCAA National Championship.
During the National Championship run, Sam maintained constant coverage of the Springfield College Pride Men’s Volleyball team. The final weekend of April 2017 proved to be the most challenging but rewarding moment in Sam’s journalism career because of the constant attention and effort that was put into each piece produced for both The Springfield Student and Off The Block. However, this is where he learned the importance of deadline reporting and that journalism was actually a viable career that he felt comfortable pursuing.
Following his second season covering the team, Sam was recognized as the first-ever Division III Reporter of the Year by Off the Block, a nationally recognized volleyball blog:
Leventhal as a photographer and Springfield men’s volleyball beat reporter for The Springfield Student produced multiple photo galleries and almost 20 stories about the NCAA Division III powerhouse. He also had two stories make an Off the Block Top College Men’s Volleyball Stories of the Week list, including an in-depth feature about Springfield coach Charlie Sullivan developing a California recruiting pipeline. In addition, The Springfield Student gained recognition as a finalist for Best Men’s Volleyball Online Coverage of the Year, which was a direct correlation of Leventhal’s work.
In the summer of 2016, Sam became the first ever intern for The Legacy Leagues as a multimedia analyst producing game recaps in both print and video, editing photos for the league, and being featured on pregame and postgame shows to cap off each night. In the ensuing seasons, Sam co-founded The Weekly Rebound Podcast. The podcast has since been handed off to other league analysts.
On this site, you can find much of Sam’s work through the different media outlets he has contributed to as well as a gallery of photos and graphics and video pieces.
Sam is looking to pursue a multimedia/marketing media career, involving online journalism, photography, videography, and graphic design.
Sam currently resides in Stratford, Conn.
